If I Started Over, I’d Change the Layout, Not the Beds
Six years and four beds later, I finally stood back and looked at the whole yard at once instead of one bed at a time. The layout is the part I’d redo first, not the boxes themselves.

I built our first beds low, the way most guides suggest, without thinking about what kneeling on hard ground for an hour would feel like a few years later. Here’s what I’d build differently now.
I found a tunnel running straight under one of our beds and realized I’d never lined the bottom of any of them. Here’s what I used instead, and why I wish I’d done it from the start.
One of our beds is wide enough that I can’t reach the middle from either side without stepping onto the soil. I built it that way on purpose, thinking bigger meant better. I was wrong.
I knelt down last week to check the corners on our oldest bed, six years in, and compared them to the newer ones. Some joints held up fine. Others taught me a lesson the hard way.
The fourth bed in our yard sits four inches taller than the other three, and it wasn’t a design choice. It was leftover lumber and a measurement I never bothered to make.
Coffee, soil, and slow weekends.
